Supernumerary (Extra) Nipple Removal

Naked Woman Covering Her BreastsA supernumerary nipple simply means that you have more than two nipples. Believe it or not, this is a condition that is not uncommon and can be found in women, as well as men.

They can appear anywhere along the "embryonic milk lines" which is the area that extends on both sides of the body from above the armpit, all the way down to the inner thighs.

When it does, it can lead to a wealth of self-confidence and social concerns. Fortunately, it’s possible to get professional help with a skilled plastic surgeon.

Causes of Duplicate Nipples

This condition is a birth defect. During the fourth week of pregnancy, the embryo’s milk lines develop and thicken. Usually, some of the tissue stays broad, forming into nipples, while the rest softens up and becomes skin. When the milk ridge doesn’t soften, the baby is born with one or more multiple nipples.

There are different kinds of supernumerary nipples. Some are accompanied by areolas and others have connective breast tissue. This is called polymastiaand these breasts can be fully functioning and capable of lactating.

Though this is possible, often times multiple nipples are so small that they go unnoticed or are mistaken for being a mole.

What Can Be Done?

Most supernumerary nipples do not cause symptoms or complications. Therefore, they don’t require to be treated.  You may, however, elect to have them removed, which is fine. Dr. Spence, our Orlando plastic surgeon can do this for you.

Removal can be done in conjunction with other breast procedures like a breast augmentation or lift.  It can also be performed as a stand-alone treatment using a local anesthetic.

If have an extra nipple and need to have it removed, Hillcrest Plastic Surgery in Orlando can help.  We will determine if that is in fact what you have and determine the best course of action for you. Contact us today!

I have been a patient of Dr. Spence twice now. I didn't hesitate to contact him when I was ready to move forward with my adominoplasty. It has been a long and, at times, rough recovery but Dr. Spence and his staff have been right by my side every step of the way.
