Liposuction for Men

Overview

Liposuction is the most common procedure performed on men in Dr. Spence’s Orlando, Florida plastic surgery practice. Liposuction is also the most popular plastic surgery procedure in America. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery statistics, an increasing number of men are seeking cosmetic surgery procedures. This is no different for men having liposuction in Orlando, Florida.

Most male liposuction patients in our Orlando plastic surgery practice are actually quite physically fit. Some of our patients include athletes, personal trainers, and many patients who exercise as many as 5 to 6 times per week.

Men are no different, in that despite aggressive exercise and diet they still find themselves plagued by areas of unwanted and resistant fat. This is most common about the waistline and flanks (love handles or spare tires as they are sometimes called). This becomes very frustrating to patients who find themselves in great physical shape but are unable to get rid of these problem areas.

Understanding Male Body Contouring

It is important that your liposuction plastic surgeon understands the needs of the male liposuction patient; their body contouring needs are different and they do not want to look feminized. Their body contour should reflect that of a well-toned male. A thorough understanding how to contour the back and waistline to avoid this is important. Even when well toned, a male has a more square appearance to the back and waistline.

Men often want etching of the abdomen to accentuate the abdominal muscles. This requires a surgeon who understands the anatomy of the underlying muscles skin thickness and elasticity. Special cannula types are necessary (the cannula is a fine instrument used to remove fat beneath the skin). Very superficial contouring removing the fatty layer close to the skin is necessary to achieve this contouring of the chest; this is a very common request in Dr. Spence’s practice. Even well defined pectoral muscles can be hidden by a thick layer of fat.

Scars are as important to men as they are to women. Scars are best hidden inside the belly button and in the line of the underwear.

Men have very dense fibrosis areas of fat; particularly the love handles often require a great deal effort to remove. Dr. Spence has found power-assisted liposuction to be extremely useful for this. The device comes with an array of different cannulas that are able to access the dense areas of fatty deposits.

Men must be aware that they sometimes stay swollen longer. Massage therapy is very useful in helping to lessen post-operative swelling and speeding recovery time.
