Everything You Need to Know About an IPL Facial

This photo rejuvenation service is popular with Hillcrest Plastic Surgery & Dermatology patients because it provides significant results with virtually no downtime. If you want to learn more about what IPL could do for you, read on or call 407-999-2585 to book your consultation.

What Does an IPL Photofacial Do?

The IPL device uses specific light wavelengths to target certain colors in your skin (like brown freckles or red facial veins). This energy heats your skin and breaks up dead or damaged skin cells so your body can eliminate them. Additionally, IPL photofacials increase collagen production for smoother, firmer, and younger-looking skin.

IPL can also effectively treat other areas of your body, from fading stretch marks to eliminating spider veins. The device has an interchangeable tip that allows our providers to customize the wavelengths and address your unique skin concerns. Patients typically see the best results after three to six sessions spaced about a month apart. Fortunately, you won’t need to take time off after your treatments, though your face may look slightly red and swollen (like a sunburn) for the first few days.

Who Is a Good Candidate for IPL Skin Rejuvenation?

As with any cosmetic treatment, you should be in good general health or have your health conditions well managed before getting IPL. Good candidates for this treatment have one or more of the following skin concerns:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Age spots (also called liver spots)
  • Freckles
  • Rosacea-related redness, pustules, or broken capillaries
  • Acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, or blemishes
  • Birthmarks
  • Stretch marks
  • Mild skin laxity
  • Large pores
  • Melasma

While IPL photofacials are a safe and effective treatment for many patients, it does carry a risk of pigmentation issues if you have a dark or olive skin tone. In this case, our providers can recommend alternative treatments. For example, microdermabrasion addresses many of the same cosmetic issues but is safe for all skin colors.
